The Vegas Valley is a desert region of about 600 square miles surrounded by the Spring Mountains and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In the center of this Vegas Valley, is located Las Vegas. Spanish explorers gave this name, which means “meadows”, because this land is verdant grassland, which is fed by natural aquifers. It has an area of 113 square miles (2000) and is elevated at 2,180 feet above sea level. Las Vegas was founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1911. The mountains act as barriers to moisture from the Pacific Ocean, and the summer days are hot, dry, and windy, while nights are cool and pleasant. The city experiences mild winters with rare snowfall. Rainfall is minimal.
The median resident age is 34.5 years. During the year 2000, the median household income was $44,069, the median house value was $137,300, and the population was 1,563,282. The races in Las Vegas are White Non-Hispanic (58.0%), Hispanic (17%), Black (10.4%), Other race (9.7%), Filipino (2.3%), American Indian (1.5%), Chinese (0.6%), and Japanese (0.5%). The economy of Las Vegas is gaming, tourism, retailing, warehousing, mining, and construction. In 2004, 20% of jobs were gaming-related. It has become the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” The State of Nevada Commission on Economic Development provides comprehensive skill-based training to local businesses through its Train Employees Now (TEN) program.
